Birkin

Conceived after a chance meeting between Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas and actress-singer Jane Birkin on a Paris–London flight in the early 1980s, where she lamented the lack of a practical large handbag. Launched in 1984 and named after her, each Birkin is hand-built by a single craftsman in roughly 15 to 20 hours using Hermès's saddle stitching. Once carrying a reputed multi-year waiting list (officially abolished in 2010).
